🗞 TL;DR - Gone are the days where all we had to worry about knowing what SEO stands for. But in light of the, you guessed it, AI disruption, it seems like a million other acronyms have entered the chat. The good news? Yes, there’s a bevy of different names, but they all still generally contain the same goal: to drive revenue, and high-quality, authoritative content.

1.) Breaking down the acronyms.

There’s a ton of jargon out there, but here are the big ones to know:

GEO: Generative engine optimization
AEO: Answer engine optimization
LLMO: Large language model optimization
AIO: Artificial intelligence optimization

All of these terms are different ways to describe optimizing your online presence to increase your chances of appearing in AI responses from tools like ChatGPT or Google’s AI Mode.

2.) Where does that leave SEO?

Don’t be so quick to toss your SEO efforts out the window. AI hasn’t completely taken over (yet), and these new approaches are not replacing traditional SEO. In fact, the search demand for SEO has grown in the past year, generating over 40k searches each month. So keep utilizing those tactics; a sloppy blog isn’t going to perform well on ChatGPT or Google.

3.) SEO vs. everyone else: Key differences

  • AI optimization values broad citations more than just backlinks.

  • The goals vary. With AI, you’re going to want to get quoted, not just pull click-through traffic, so you’ll want to establish different KPIs.

  • Content research should now include questions that people actually ask, not just what they type into Google.

  • Your writing should be answer-based - AKA, your content needs clear, quotable sections that answer specific questions.
