💡 Today’s Insight 💡
🗞 TL;DR - ‘Tis the season that every AI company is dropping features to help shoppers find what they’re looking for. OpenAI and Perplexity both announced AI shopping features this week that integrate into their existing chatbots to help users research potential purchases, a major impact for eCommerce marketers.
💡 Insight - What do they do? ChatGPT’s new Shopping Research tool has users describe what they need, answer clarifying questions about budget and preferences, then creates personalized buyer’s guides by researching products across the web.
Perplexity’s feature uses the chatbot’s memory to augment shopping-related searches for its users and allows users to ask for recommendations tailored to what the chatbot already knows about them.
This move reiterates why AI engine optimization (AEO) is growing increasingly important for eCommerce retailers. These shopping tools are powered by OpenAI’s and Perplexity’s models, which means product and website accuracy are paramount to ranking within the shopping models. Visibility may depend on how well your products and pages are represented in the AI models.
Since these shopping features are available now to users, it’s also something to consider heading into this weekend’s shopping holidays. Make sure your product descriptions are accurate and clear, and keep an eye out in your metrics for any AI chatbot conversions to understand how these factor into your marketing efforts.
