💡 Today’s Insight 💡
🗞 TL;DR - Obsessing over your Ahrefs SEO score? Google’s experts think you maybe shouldn’t. Search Relations team member Martin Splitt outlined a three-step framework in a Search Central Lightning Talk that emphasizes site-specific context over standardized metrics.
💡 Insight - Google’s Splitt emphasizes that understanding your site’s technology should come before running diagnostic tools. Splitt notes that technical audits “need experience and expertise to adapt guidelines and checklists to the site you audit.”
Here are the three phases of Google’s recommended framework:
Use tools and guidelines to identify potential issues
Create a report tailored to your specific site
Make recommendations based on actual site needs
For example, high 404s don’t always mean problems. It could just mean that you’ve removed a lot of content recently, and it’s to be expected. But SEO tool scores won’t give you the full picture, they’ll just flag it as “bad.”
The key takeaway? Don’t follow tools blindly. As Splitt says, “Make sure your findings are meaningful for the website in question and take the time to prioritize them for maximum impact.”
