💡 Today’s Insight 💡
🗞 TL;DR - In a huge move for eComm businesses, ChatGPT added shopping features to search last week. While it’s only been a week and there’s still a lot to learn, Search Engine Land rounded up everything we know about how ChatGPT is choosing products and ranking them (so far).
💡 Insight - How does ChatGPT Search select its product results? It’s based on a mix of the following indicators:
User intent and context - based on the user’s current query, may include saved memory, may factor in custom instructions
Structured third-party data - product metadata such as price, product descriptions, and reviews
Model-generated reasoning - ChatGPT generates a response to a query before incorporating search data and uses this to interpret which factors matter most
Relevance filtering - how well products match perceived user needs (ex. if user mentions budget, price is prioritized)
How are results displayed and ranked? Results appear in visual carousels inside the chat and includes:
Image
Simplified title and description (generated by the model)
Price (from the first listed merchant)
Links to product pages
AI-generated labels based on available data (ex. “budget-friendly” or “most popular”)
Review summaries and ratings from third-party sources
Merchants are selected through metadata supplied by third-party providers primarily on the order they’re ranked in that third-party source. ChatGPT doesn’t re-rank merchants based on factors like price, shipping, or return policies.
