💡 Today’s Insight 💡

🗞 TL;DR - If you’re not a parent or have kids in your life, you might not realize how major the back-to-school (BTS) marketing opportunity is… but for any eCommerce or retail business, the BTS push can be almost as impactful as holiday season. If you’re targeting any relevant demographics – parents, kids, college students – you should know that the marketing season has turned into a months-long, creator-led initiative, according to Later.

💡 Insight - According to Later's 2026 research, brands are starting earlier, investing more in social, and tailoring messaging to specific audiences, especially college students, who saw the largest increase in targeting year over year (from 57% to 69%).

Lots of BTS messaging is built around a generalized “back to school” concept that lumps K-12 parents, college students, and younger shoppers into a single, undifferentiated audience. And that’s proving really ineffective as college students are emerging as the segment with the highest purchase intent. College-focused categories include: tech, personal care, food, and dorm essentials.

The article highlights a major shift in campaign timing: 35% of brands now run all-summer BTS campaigns, and nearly half begin planning in April or May. This aligns with consumer behavior, as nearly one-third of shoppers start purchasing in June. Brands that wait until late July risk missing the consideration phase when creator content builds awareness and purchase intent.

Channel preferences are changing, too. Organic social has overtaken email as the top BTS marketing channel, with 78% of parents and students discovering promotions on social. Short-form video dominates, with 75% of consumers saying it's the most attention-grabbing format, while shopping hauls and influencer recommendations strongly influence purchasing decisions.

Despite sales being the primary campaign goal, only 30% of marketers track ROI and 28% track conversions, leaving many unable to prove campaign effectiveness.

So, if your goal is to take advantage of BTS season shoppers, plan early, personalize messaging, and aim to measure real business outcomes.
