💡 Today’s Insight 💡
🗞 TL;DR - If the SEO industry does one thing right, it’s coming up with a new way to mass-produce content that everyone is sure will be the hack to success. But it never works and never has worked. Instead, Pedro Dias argues in Search Engine Journal, you should be working to serve Google’s algorithm through useful content, not a barrage of the same thing.
💡 Insight - In case you forgot, here’s a refresher of past unhelpful SEO patterns:
2008-2011 had Content Spinning. Essentially take one article, run it through software that swaps synonyms, and now you have 50 “unique” articles. Except unique and valuable are not synonyms and the scaling strategy fell apart.
2015-2022 had Programmatic SEO. Instead of spinning existing articles, you’d build templates and fill them with structured data. But still, without substance underneath, scaling didn’t work.
And from 2023 to now, AI-Generated Content at Scale. Same idea, just shinier AI-enabled tools. You’re still not scaling content, just scaling crawl budget waste.
Here’s why all of these hacks fail: Google doesn’t evaluate content in isolation. It evaluates content relative to everything else in the index on the same topic.
There is a minimum threshold of genuine, original insights with value, which no amount of volume can help. And in the case of scaling AI content to gain visibility in AI-powered searches, it can actually backfire and get ignored by those systems.
The moral of the story? You cannot treat content like a manufacturing problem. You can’t automate originality and you can’t template lived experiences.
Before publishing anything ask yourself: What does this page offer that the reader cannot already get? If the answer is “nothing, but we’ll have more pages indexed” then stop. You’re actively sabotaging your own content strategy.
