🗞 TL;DR - According to a new article from Bloomberg, Unilever PLC’s recently appointed CEO Fernando Fernandez said he “would hire 20x more influencers as part of a social-first marketing strategies because consumers are ‘suspicious’ of corporate branding.” It’s part of a large trend from big brands to increase influencer marketing spend in an effort to earn consumer trust.

💡 Insight - These days, big-name YouTubers and TikTokkers are just as recognizable as TV and film actors (looking at you, MrBeast). Plus, with their deep niche focuses, influencers offer more specialized reach to help ensure your brand messaging hits the right audience.

According to a recent report from Statista, the global influencer marketing industry is expected to grow 36% from 2024, reaching close to $33 billion in total. That combined with Unilever PLC’s CEO’s recent interview shows that the numbers are trending upwards.

The added value of working with creators, rather than just advertising your brand yourself, is that these creators know what works on each platform and how to frame brand messages in a way that’s receptive to audiences. You don’t have to understand it, but you should trust influencers to know the latest online trends and how your brand fits in it.

If you’re thinking of doing more with influencers, upping your budget is a good place to start as the right influencers will command an appropriate fee. That might mean not being able to work with certain influencers in your niche, but it’s worth considering influencer marketing seriously alongside more common areas of spend like digital ads or PR.
