Today’s Insight

📰 TL;DR - Twitter/X sometimes feels bleak these days… but is there a reality where another competitor overcomes the social media giant? One thing is clear: there’s a huge opportunity for a new leader in the microblogging space and Social Media Today analyzed all the potential X alternatives.

💡 Insight - Here’s who could be leading the microblogging space of tomorrow:

  • X/Twitter - It’s not dead yet, not even close! While X ad revenue is down and its been stuck at 500M users for a year now, Super Bowl conversations on the platform were up 26% from last year (potentially due to the Taylor Swift effect).

  • Threads - One of the most likely competitors, being driven by Meta’s resources. That said, Threads continues to resist entirely replicating Twitter, which gives it a competitive edge and users hestiation over switching over.

  • Bluesky - Opened to the public last week, its claim to fame is being decentralized and offer algorithmic control to users. But it’s still trailing in users greatly from Threads or X.

  • Mastodon - Still too small, too niche, not decentralized, and has a challenging UI.

  • Post, T2, Spill - All very, very niche and small. But with smaller startups comes more growth mindsets, so… maybe?
