💡 Today’s Insight 💡

🗞 TL;DR - Marketing expert Tom Orbach dove into the concept of “screenshot marketing,” in his newsletter Marketing Ideas. You’ve definitely seen it, but it’s the idea of using screenshots (whether real or fake) from iMessage, DMs, etc. to tell your product’s story and grab your audience’s attention.

💡 Insight - Orbach argues that people are naturally nosy. These screenshots mimic leaked messages, things that shouldn’t be seen by your eyes. This, in turn, grabs peoples’ attention because it’s something mysterious. We can’t help our curiosity at eavesdropping.

He goes on to say how his client Wiz discovered a huge data leak from a Microsoft AI team, resulting in a post that used censored text in a private chat to talk about the leak. It ended up being their most viral post ever because it grabbed attention and entertained audience members with its humorous response.

Orbach reiterates that, whenever possible (ethically speaking of course), you should publish real screenshots. Real messages can sometimes make for super entertaining content. But if you can’t catch the perfect moment, you can easily manufacture your own screenshots by doing one of the following:

  • Showing behind-the-scenes employee discussions

  • Displaying customer testimonials from CSM conversations

  • Answer commonly asked questions through chat screenshots
