💡 Today’s Insight 💡

🗞 TL;DR - Video seems to be the content format everyone is pushing these days… but is “more video” actually the golden answer people are making it out to be? Well, it’s not that simple. Social media scheduler Buffer analyzed millions of social posts from multiple platforms to find out which content formats really reign supreme on each network.

💡 Insight - Important to note that the metric for deciding which made “the best content format” differed depending on the platform and how it’s used.

On TikTok, obviously video really does reign supreme… it’s a short-form video-sharing platform. Videos earned 18% more views than text posts and 7% more than photos or carousels. That said, carousels and text posts are surprisingly competitive.

On Instagram, video does come out on top when it comes to median reach per post. Reels pulled in 39% more reach than carousels and a whopping 122% more than single-image posts. But in terms of median engagement, carousels came out on top with 12% more engagement than reels and 114% more than single-image posts.

On Facebook, pictures took first place for engagement with 35% more engagement than text posts and nearly 44% more than videos. Posts with links came in last with the lowest engagement of all content types on the platform.

On Threads, pictures surprisingly claimed first place with 0.6% more engagement than videos, 37% more than posts with links, and 60% more than text posts.

On LinkedIn, carousels (document posts) earned 278% more engagement than videos, 303% more than images, and a giant 596% more than text-only posts. That said, LinkedIn has been strongly pushing video posts as a way to grow followings in 2025.

On X, text posts are still gold, seeing 30% more engagement than videos, 37% more than pictures, 53% more than link posts, and 113% more than retweets.
