📰 TL;DR - A new report from We Are Social and Meltwater on social media and digital trends worldwide found that active social media users have passed 5.04 billion, equivalent to 62.3% of the world’s population – an annual growth of 5.6%. The report has a bunch of interesting stats to help us understand the current state of internet usage.

💡 Insight - Here are some of our top takeaways from the report:

  • The typical user now spends 6 hours and 40 mins online each day with 2 hours and 23 mins per day on social media and uses 67 platforms each month

  • TikTok has the highest average time per Android user of any social platform globally, with 34 hours per month

  • Instagram takes the spot as the world’s favorite social platform with 16.5% of internet users between ages 16-64 considering it their top platform

  • Digital ad spend grew by 10% YoY to $720 billion, social ad spend increased by 69.3% to $207 billion, and influencer marketing increased by 17%

  • The typical internet user now spends 17 mins less per day watching TV content than they did last year – a decline of 8.2% YoY
