💡 Today’s Insight 💡

🗞 TL;DR - As far back as 2023, social media users wanted to see more frontline employees on brand accounts. Now, the idea has caught fire and notable brands are often creating and scaling employee influencer programs. Sprout Social outlines what employee influencers and employee-generated content are, and the 5 steps you should take to launch such a program.

💡 Insight - What are employee influencers? They’re team members who promote a brand’s culture and products by leveraging their personal social media following or appearing in the brand’s social content.

What does employee-generated content look like? That’s the cool thing, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Media companies often take a creator-inspired approach to social media by including its journalists in social videos to provide nuance that carousels and standalone headlines lack. Startups can use Product Managers to recount how and why a product feature was created. Non-profits and government orgs can use its staff to star in social content and educate followers about the library’s mission and services.

How can you launch an employee influencer program of your own? In these 5 steps:

  1. Start a pilot group. Start small and select team members who are already comfortable being on-camera.

  2. Create training resources. Take stock of the resources you have and adapt them to meet the levels of social production expertise on your team.

  3. Scale your pool of employee influencers. Once you have your core group of employee influencers and know what works, begin making plans to expand. Think beyond marketing and communications and look for POVs that are underrepresented in public-facing comms.

  4. Support your internal creators. In addition to instructional resources, make sure they have everything they need to actually capture content.

  5. Think beyond social content. The potential for an employee influencer program doesn’t stop at social content and can be used in other marketing efforts like in-person events or internal comms.
