Today’s Insight

📰 TL;DR - AirChat, the newest social media network from AngelList founder Naval Ravikant and former Tinder product exec Brian Norgard, has been gaining a lot of steam recently. The app encourages users to “just talk,” like X meets voice notes or Clubhouse. But does it have a future?

💡 Insight - Depending on who you ask, AirChat is either the next big thing or the next thing to fail. It’s hard to imagine a world where AirChat accomplishes what Clubhouse couldn’t, but they are different apps. Clubhouse, while being an audio app, was led by user-curated rooms, where a lack of community moderation led to its downfall. AirChat is more of a traditional social network in that regard, so maybe it has a chance.

But it’s possible that users just don’t want to use their voice to create content. While some love Apple’s audio message feature to communicate with friends, it’s not seeing the wide adoption that text-based messaging has. That doesn’t bode well for social networks built on the hope that people want to use audio messaging.

Airchat does have the benefit of including automated captions to the voice posts, which allows people to read instead of listen. But the accuracy of those captions might be a concern, which is increasingly important in a world where a growing majority of users are listening to audio with open captions. Time will tell whether or not the app thrives, but not many experts are optimistic.
