🗞 TL;DR - AI can be a writer’s best friend – but that’s exactly where it shines, as a supplement to a human writer’s value. AI-generated writing often feels robot-written, so while it can optimize your workflow and automate text based on your prompts… you should be using this workflow to ensure you’re bringing a human touch to AI content.
💡 Insight - AI-generated writing often falls short on purposeful imperfection (aka natural quirks, tangents, and varied sentence structure that add authenticity), emotional intelligence (the intuitive depth that comes from lived experience), and cultural context (touchpoints and adapted tone based on context).
Instead, use AI to optimize your output, then use this 4-step workflow to edit what it delivers:
Review the structure and big-picture of the piece. Read the entire draft like a skeptical reader would. Look for logical flow issues, redundant sections, and unhelpful insights. Ask: Does this piece make sense? Would a human structure it this way?
Humanize the language and flow. Break up robotic rhythms and sterile AI tones. Vary sentence lengths, replace corporate-speak with actual human language, and cut meaningless filler sentences.
Add the human value only you can provide. Infuse the piece with opinions (when appropriate), personal stories, unique metaphors, or nuanced insights from your expertise.
Take a final pass. Make sure you’ve got a punchy opening hook, remove any lingering AI patterns, optimize for search, fact-check every claim, and add CTAs or questions that engage readers. At the end of the day, would you be proud to put your name or your brand’s name on the piece?
