💡 Today’s Insight 💡

🗞 TL;DR - New data analyzing 800K+ query–page pairs across 16K+ prompts challenges a core SEO assumption: more content ≠ better performance in AI search. Instead, shorter, tightly focused content is more likely to be cited by ChatGPT than long, “ultimate guide” style pages.

💡 Insight - The research found that covering every possible subtopic has minimal impact on citation rates. In fact, pages with moderate coverage (~25-50% of subtopics) often outperform those attempting exhaustive coverage. This suggests that breadth can dilute relevance rather than improve it.

What actually drives visibility in ChatGPT is:

  • Query match (relevance): How closely a page aligns with the user’s specific question

  • Retrieval rank: Where the page appears in AI’s internal search results (higher rank = dramatically higher citation likelihood)

This reflects how AI systems work: they break queries into sub-questions, scan multiple sources, and select the clearest, most relevant answers. So, what should you do as a result of these findings?

Ditch “ultimate guides.” They’re the least reliable performers in ChatGPT. Instead of long, all-in-one pages, answer one question and stay focused.

Optimize for exact query match. Align headlines, subheads, and copy tightly with real user questions.

Break content into modular pages. Link out to multiple focused assets targeting distinct intents instead of one massive guide.

Audit bloated content. If you’ve already published overly broad pages, you can stil correct it! Trim or split the pages that try to cover too much.
