๐ TL;DR - Online shopping scams have grown frequently in the U.S. with the emergence of local sale groups like Facebook Marketplace. In general, itโs led to a growing fear of online shopping scams โ as in, paying money for a product or service and getting ghosted in return. Spokeo ran a study on consumer concerns and found fears often exceed reality.
๐ก Insight - Here are some of the top takeaways from the study:
55% of consumers said they feared receiving fake or incorrect products when shopping on online marketplaces despite only 15% experiencing it this past year
98% of respondents have at least one fear about shopping on online marketplaces
29% of Americans are comfortable spending more than $100 on an online marketplace without first researching the seller
More women than men take more safety precautions when shopping in online marketplaces
The top three anxiety-inducing online shopping scenarios were: paying on sites that lacked secure encryption (22%), clicking on unsolicited offers via email or text (21%), and completing peer-to-peer transactions (17%)
