💡 Today’s Insight 💡
🗞 TL;DR - While Google’s experts reiterate that strong coding skills aren’t a requirement for doing effective SEO work, they do maintain that “in order to optimize a system or work with a system so deeply like SEOs do, you have to understand some of the characteristics of the system.” But how much code should SEO workers know? Some very specific pieces of knowledge.
💡 Insight - Rather than learning entirely how to code, Google recommends that SEO pros learn specific use cases and functions. For example, how web technologies function – as in, “what is a header, how does HTTPS conceptually work, what’s the certificate, and how does that influence how the connection works.”
Google also advises being familiar with the differences between web protocols, such as HTTP/2 and HTTP/1.1. Also consider having some awareness of how JavaScript affects page rendering – but you don’t need to go so far as learning to write in programming languages like C, C++, or JavaScript.
But Google maintains a few key caveats about SEO pros learning coding: your role defines your needs. If you’re working on content strategy or localization, you probably don’t need such a deep technical knowledge. SEO isn’t one-size-fits-all, so make sure to use context to guide your decisions. Lastly, cross-team collaboration is vital. You might want to work on improving communication between developers and SEO teams rather than teaching your SEO pros how to code.
