🗞 TL;DR - OpenAI just launched their ChatGPT general purpose agent which could very well be the most major change to online interactions since the introduction of mobile browsing. With such a major change, businesses (especially SEO-driven ones) can expect some impacts soon. Search Engine Journal outlined all the basic impacts, and we’ve listed the key takeaways below.
💡 Insight - What is ChatGPT agent in a nutshell? It’s a tool based on OpenAI’s Operator and Deep Search plus ChatGPT’s natural language capabilities. It can help users complete tasks like:
browsing web pages and interacting with the on-page interface
answering reasoning-based queries using text-based browsers
execute actions through a terminal command-line interface
utilize connectors to enable it to interact with third-party apps
Since this ChatGPT agent can now do work for users and handle complex tasks from start to finish, it’s now becoming vitally important for publishers, online businesses, and SEO leaders to make websites agentic AI-friendly.
Agentic AI responds well to structured on-page web elements including: headings, tables, forms with labeled input forms, product listings with consistent fields (ex. price, availability, name, label), authors/dates/headlines, and menus/filters.
Of course, it’ll take time for adoption of the tool to truly take effect… but sites that are optimized for AI agents will see the most gains as the tides shift toward agent-driven automation for online tasks.
