💡 Today’s Insight 💡

🗞 TL;DR - Feeling a bit of deja vu? Join the club. TikTok was scheduled to face a U.S. ban as of this past Saturday, but the nationwide ban has been deferred another 75 days. If you’re still confused what this means for your brand and what you should do, keep reading.

💡 Insight - So, is TikTok actually getting banned in the U.S.? Maybe, maybe not. The new deadline extension means that TikTok could face a nationwide ban if they are unable to sell their U.S. business out of China to a U.S.-based company that the government approves as a non-security threat. If they don’t, it’s also very possible the ban could get another extension, since it seems there’s a precedent set at this point.

What should brands do in the short-term? Stay informed and wait, mostly. You can download your existing content (in case the app gets urgently pulled), prepare proactive messaging, review your active influencer partnerships, and repurpose content on alternative platforms. But all that might also be premature and unnecessary.

What future considerations should brands make? Honestly, unclear. It’s never a bad idea to diversify your platform strategy and test out new growth channels, like Bluesky or Threads. Use this time to figure out what magic may have worked on TikTok and recreate that on a different platform. Recognize that you may have to jump ship at some point, and make sure your brand has a plan B in place if TikTok does cease to exist in the U.S.
