💡 Today’s Insight 💡
🗞 TL;DR - Meta launched ads on its text-based platform Threads to all eligible advertisers globally last week, after only three months of testing. While it’s a quick turnaround, Threads ads have been eagerly anticipated for awhile, so advertisers might be chomping at the bit to jump on the new opportunity. Experts are split on whether or not it’s worthwhile just yet, but Digiday has some commentary to help you decide.
💡 Insight - What is the ad opportunity exactly? Well, since Threads is a text-based app, the new image ad placement is in the Threads feed. Advertisers can access the opportunity in the Advantage+ platform via Meta’s algorithmic ad placements or manual placements. Currently, the placement is on by default for any new campaigns using Advantage+, but those with the manual placement setting can opt out.
Are advertisers flocking the platform? Kinda. Some media buyers and strategists are jumping on after waiting for Threads to launch ads since it debuted. One expert said the new placements allow them, “to tap into incremental audiences, gain fresh visibility, expand creative testing opportunities, and potentially lower CPMs.” Others are taking a more measured approach as conversions will likely be harder to generate initially.
Are Threads ads actually a contender for a new ad buying opp? Maybe. The placement puts Threads more in line with X, and could offer up a safer alternative in the long run for advertisers. That said, X still offers a wider variety of ad formats including image, video, carousel, and text ad plays across many placement options. Though with how quickly Meta launched Threads ads to begin with, don’t be surprised if they start expanding rapidly.
