💡 Today’s Insight 💡

🗞 TL;DR - Wouldn’t it be great if we could all jump on every relevant keyword we wanted? Unfortunately, legal, brand, and compliant constraints are real. But that doesn’t mean you entirely have to lose out on that traffic opportunity! Search Engine Land highlights how you can still use the right signals to capture demand anyway.

💡 Insight - The key to optimizing for keywords you can’t use is sending the right contextual and semantic signals so search engines understand your page’s relevance.

First, validate the opportunity. Often, restricted terms are exactly how users search, so pulling search volume data can help align stakeholders and clarify how strictly the term is off-limits.

From there, success comes from building context around the keyword instead of using it directly. This includes using related terms, synonyms, and breaking phrases into components (e.g., using “nursing” + “care” + “home” separately).

You can also reference the keyword indirectly (e.g., in questions or comparative language) without positioning it as your primary term. Additionally, incorporating adjacent products or categories that can legally use the term can unlock more flexibility in how pages are labeled.

Finally, anchor text plays a major role. Internal and external links using the restricted keyword help search engines associate your page with that term, even if it’s not heavily used on-page.
