🗞 TL;DR - Since OpenAI launched ChatGPT ads for U.S. Free and Go users in February, 600+ advertisers have placements running against high-intent prompts. Which means that your competitors might be trying to divert searchers from your brand’s earned AEO to become their next conversion. But with the simple steps below, you can find out if you’re getting customers swiped out from under you.

💡 Insight - Here’s how to find out if your competitors are stealing your ChatGPT answer visibility:

Step 1: Map the queries your buyers are already asking. Build a prompt list that represents how your buyers actually talk to ChatGPT. Start with the questions you know already convert in paid search and high-intent organic, then translate them into how someone would phrase the same need to ChatGPT.

Step 2: Run each prompt in a ChatGPT session. Once you have your prompt list, test them out in a new ChatGPT chat and pay attention to the session setup to see whether the data becomes useful or just noise. Run each prompt and screenshot the response, including any sponsored card that appears below the answer. Do not only run each prompt once, as you’ll just capture one ad auction outcome, not the full competitive set. Aim to test at least 20-30 runs of any singular prompt across multiple days.

Step 3: Capture the four data points that define a competitor’s ad. Those important data points are: ad title, ad description, final URL, and impression share. Record these same fields in the same place every time for every impression. Then, compare how many times each advertiser appeared, the prompt that triggered the ad, the date and time of the run, and the session details.

Step 4: Repeat this process often enough to see Share of Voice over time. Doing this only once could mislead you as you’ll only catch one iteration of how the prompts perform. To see a full share of voice, try to follow these ideal testing schedules:

  • Daily runs on your top 5-10 highest-value prompts (aka queries closest to purchase intent)

  • Weekly runs on the full 30-50 prompt list

  • Monthly trend pulls to see how competitors gain or lose share over 30-day windows.

None of this should be super unfamiliar if you’ve been operating paid search for awhile, and most tools like Google have ad libraries and dozens of third-party monitoring tools. ChatGPT ads have none of that yet, so if you wanna get ahead, you’ve gotta put in the work.
