🗞 TL;DR - Well, PPC bidding just got a lot more interesting. Google just announced Smart Bidding Exploration, a new opt-in feature designed to help advertisers capture more conversions from their existing campaigns. It’s a major shift in how Google allows advertisers to find value in queries they’ve been overlooking – we’ve listed everything you need to know below.

💡 Insight - How does Smart Bidding Exploration work? It works within the bounds of your existing campaign structure. Note that it doesn’t expand your audience targeting or broaden your keyword strategy, it allows the bidding algorithm to pursue opportunities you were eligible for more aggressively – particularly on Broad Match and Dynamic Search Ads (DSA) campaigns.

How can you add it to your campaigns? You’ll need to allow for some flexibility in your ROAS targets. You’ll have to give Google permission to bid below their typical ROAS threshold, generally in the 10-30% range. This means Google may raise your bids on certain queries if its AI systems determine those queries could convert at a healthy volume and cost.

What can you expect from reporting? While you won’t see a detailed breakout of every new search query (due to privacy threshold), you’ll get visibility into: the number of unique search categories generating impressions and conversions, how much traffic came from these categories, and the volume of new conversions compared to your baseline.

Should you try it? That’s up to you. If your Search campaigns have seemed to stall in growth or feel overly narrow in scope, this could be a solid way to unlock additional conversions. Additionally, if your campaigns feel too tightly held to a strict ROAS target, you might be unintentionally hindering your performance. The feature is a good way to capture more conversions without impacting campaign structure or budget.
