🗞 TL;DR - Whether you like it or not, Google’s AI Overviews is the new face of search engine results. But because the results are often crafted using information from online forums with user-generated content like Reddit and Quora, the information can be inaccurate or sometimes entirely false. Search Engine Land outlined how AI summaries exacerbate negative threads and what brands can do to correct false results.
💡 Insight - How can negative stories about your brand end up on AI summaries? Well, many of the Reddit threads that show up are complaint-driven – think “Is Brand X actually a scam?” These threads get extremely popular, creating strong fodder for AI Overviews to combine these volatile comments into a single answer where minority opinions end up being represented as facts.
There are a few patterns you can look for to check if your brand is being negatively targeted by Google AI Overviews. Common trends include: overwhelming Reddit criticism (as forum platforms are favored by the AI), pros vs. cons summaries (though they often ignore pros altogether), and outdated content resurfacing (holds far too much value).
If you find your brand is being negatively targeted in Google’s AI Overviews results, here’s what you can do:
Monitor online forums. Get ahead of conversations on Reddit and Quora by monitoring the name of your business and top players on your team.
Create “AI-readable” content. Always be creating content designed to land on AI Overviews and aim to be citation-worthy.
Address known criticism. Respond to online reviews kindly, suppress or remove negative content, and establish your business as a caring practice online.
Coordinate various teams. Make sure you have the right experts across legal, SEO, and PR to deal with any controversies before they arise.
