🗞 TL;DR - According to a new Adthena analysis of 40k+ daily ChatGPT ad placements, the new format is standardizing. And it’s looking pretty different than traditional advertising norms. Search Engine Land summarized the findings, and we’ve got the highlights for you below.
💡 Insight - Early data on ChatGPT ads suggests that clarity, relevance, and credibility outperform creativity and brand storytelling. In a conversational environment, users aren’t browsing, they’re asking for help. Ads that feel like direct, useful answers perform best.
A few of the key findings:
The average headline clocks in at just 30 characters and around 5 words. Body copy averages 116 characters and roughly 19 words. Put simply, every word matters and needs to contribute directly to clarity on conversion.
Almost every ad leads with the brand name. The pattern is “Brand: Benefit” headline, providing easy recall for users to evaluate options (not discover them).
Headlines are compressed. Typically uses two tight sentences – a proof point followed by an offer or nudge.
Context mirroring is a defining feature. The strongest ads directly reflect the user’s query of situation, showing off real-time tailoring.
Concrete value signals carry outsized weight. Dollar signs and specific numbers (ex. prices, savings, performance) consistently outperform vague claims.
Low-friction offers are the most common conversion lever. Similarly, calls to action are often explicit and action-oriented to reduce commitment barriers and abandon generic prompts.
In short, ChatGPT ads behave more like enhanced search results than traditional ads, where success is driven by intent alignment and usefulness.
