Get access to the ChatGPT API - Create a free OpenAI account and generate an API key. The API is pay-as-you-go, so you should first start by setting a $25-50 prepaid credit, which is enough to prototype, build, and run light scripts for a few weeks.
Choose where you’ll use the API - You can call from different environments depending on your workflow including Google Apps Script, Python, Node.js, and Zapier.
Call the ChatGPT API - Use standardized calling code to implement GPT-4o from your chosen environment.
Efficiency best practices - Some of these include:
Batching your inputs - Group 5-20 titles or search terms in one request
Using system prompts - Set the GPT role clearly
Lowering temperature - Keeping between 0-0.3 makes outputs consistent and avoids hallucination
Controlling response length - Ask for specific output format or word count when needed
Testing edge cases - Run messy inputs through manually to see how GPT responds
